We train our bodies when we practice the pattern.  We train our mind when we visualize what we are doing and how to apply the technique.  We train our spirit when we have a purpose, when we know why we are training, when we train with energy and when it shows from the inside to the outside.

When we acknowledge all three trainings; body, mind and spirit then we can say that our whole being is engaged and striving together to achieve our goal.  We can apply this training method in our daily lives, our jobs, our careers, our relationships and every aspect of our lives.  Ask  yourself how can I apply my body, my mind and my spirit to the current task at hand.  This will help you to see all angles and to avoid the excuses and procrastination.

Just always remember: Body/Mind/Spirt and of course He can do, She can do, Why not me!

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches her students to have a purpose and determination.  For myself this translates to having a reason why I am doing something.  If I have a reason why I am doing something then I am able to rise above the circumstances that try to discourage me, slow me down or try to stop me.

I want to go training today because I want to become a strong person and I want to be disciplined.  Now with that reason if I am a little tired or feeling a little lazy I am able to rise above those feelings and get myself to the school, changed in my uniform and out on the floor.  I know that in the long run I am going to benefit towards my goal of becoming stronger and more disciplined.  I want my goal more than I don’t want to face the path to get there. 

I want to live so I will run out of the burning house.

We have our physical body, our mental body and our spiritual body. 

We have all experienced in our training under Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim at Jung SuWon Martial Art Academy the three main concepts of Body, Mind and Spirit.  We train our physical body every day in class when we are practicing our movements, basics, kicks and forms.  We train our mental body when we meditate and focus on relieving our mental stress.  We train our Spiritual body when we work to bring up our energy level and when we work to create the passion, drive and motivation in our training.

So let’s understand these three bodies!

Physical Body:  Our physical movements, skill, balance coordination, timing, power.

Mental Body:  Our true thinking, our view, our perspective, our positive mental attitude.

Spiritual Body:  Our passion, our drive, our motivation, our purpose in life. 

Let’s recognize our Body, Mind and Spirit in every aspect of our daily life.  Let’s acknowledge our Body, Mind and Spirit in every environment we are in.  We can develop our Body/Mind/Spirit at home, in school, at work, during training, personally, and in our relationships with others.

Be the Master of your Life!  Take Charge!

Testing for the next belt rank is a time to challenge yourself and a time to put a stake in the ground and declare what you have learned.  It is a time to announce yourself and perform to the best of your ability.  The testing environment is different than regular class hour and so you are being tested more on how you can perform under these new conditions.  Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim has said that under the ideal conditions we can perform our best.  The true test is how can we perform in different conditions?  How can we perform when we least expect that we will need to perform? 

Ready any time!  Ready any place!  Ready anywhere!

The Way of the Warrior!

Hey check out this martial arts children’s book called “Frog Milk“!  It’s one of many books written in the light of the art of Jung SuWon.

The moral of the story is never give up.  The frog, faced with drowning in a bucket of milk will not give up swimming to save his life.  Eventually almost in the same way that faith heals us… the frog’s swimming churns the milk enough that it turns to butter!  With the new solid surface the frog is able to jump out of the bucket and save his life!  I like this story so much because it’s so easy to evaluate our current situation and show how all the facts show there is no way out!  But the facts change when you change and when you stick with your desire, goals and purpose.

I bet if we all wrote what our definition of martial arts is we would come up with a very similar response.  Inner strength, body, mind, spirit, balance, coordination, timing, self defense, self confidence, self esteem and more.  We would define the Master – Student relationship.  Getting up when you are knocked down.  Inner peace and harmony on the inside when there is stress and discord on the outside. 

Let’s all get on the same page now.  Let’s not compare one martial art style with another.  Let’s not say “My Kung Fu is better than your Kung Fu”.  Let’s focus on what we are learning and what we “take off the mat” with.  How do we grow and how are we a better person after our martial art class is over and we walk off the mat.    Let’s talk about something incredible that our master instructor taught us.  Let’s help others to join class and let’s all train together!

Our Jung SuWon Warrior motto is “He can do, She can do, Why not me!”.  This warrior spirit and attitude teaches us to believe in ourself and know that if others can do it then so can we!  Just recently Great Grandmaster has given us a new updated version of this very same Can Do Attitude and Spirit.  Great Grandmaster Kim will call out “Pil Seung” (means Victory in Korean), and the students will reply with a brisk and resounding “Can Do Now!!”.  This “Can Do Now” means not only that yes we can do it but that we can do it now!  “Can Do Now” means that we need to do it now.  We need to be pro-active and start now.  We need to not wait or make excuses but take action now!

During a very special outdoor training and sparring session Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim taught me to “Let if flow” while sparring. 

We tend to think in a line.  My partner attacks and I block then I attack back then I wait for my partner to counter attack.  Neither of us are thinking past the present moment.

But when I ski down the mougle slope I am always looking 3-5 turns ahead of myself.  Perhaps I should be doing this in sparring also.  As my parnter is attacking I am now thinking way past the simple block and counter attack about to follow.  I am thinking about letting it flow continuously.  I am thinking several steps ahead of the present moment.

One way I can describe it is like a jet liner goes on auto-pilot.  It lets the computer maintain stability and keep the airliner level and moving forward on course.  The computer makes the minior adjustment along the way in realtime.  Similarly when I spar I need to move into this same realtime auto pilot mode and really let it flow.

When I did this time seemed to slow down and I felt my emotions relax and I felt calmer although I was actually moving faster!

This quote from the Seven Steps to Inner Power exemplifies the heart of the art of Jung SuWon. 

 What it means is that through Jung SuWon training we are learning how to overcome obstacles.  We are learning how to stretch and move and coordinate our bodies in ways we have never done before.  We are learning to pick up our energy level, be disciplined and focus on one point.  These learning experiences stay with us after we leave the floor and go about our daily life.  Just are obstacles present themselves in our life we can now face them in the same manner as we do on the Jung SuWon training floor. 

The training environment fosters a positive mental attitude and a proactive “Can Do Now!” spirit.

Principles of Mental Conduct

At Jung SuWon Martial Art Academy, the founder, Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim gives us 5 Principles of Mental Conduct. Before we address the principals in particular let’s address the concept of a “Principle of Mental Conduct”. We understand the concept of how we should conduct our bodies and our behavior in different settings. Examples would be at home, at work, at Church, on vacation, in court etc. So then what is a principal of mental conduct? The question implies the answer… there is a way we should conduct our mind and our thinking.

1. Conquer your own weaknesses and fears rather than others.

2. Learn from your mistakes

3. We have the ability to do, the capacity to act and the capability to perform and produce.

4. Have a purpose and determination.

5. Have a positive mental attitude.
