Martial arts is all about self-improvement in many different aspects of our lives. Whether we want to get in shape or become physically and mentally stronger, martial arts provides an opportunity to improve in these areas. The focus and discipline we apply to ourselves during training provides a means for self-improvement. One key attribute that Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim highlights is the importance of visualization during our martial arts training. It is important to identify what our goals are in our training and also in our personal lives. We may feel like we are only focusing on our physical body during training, but also we are working out our mental and emotional state. After training has ended, we feel more confidence, more energy and more focus. This can be applied to our personal lives and what we are striving for.

Throughout the martial arts training, we are reminded to focus on our goals. Also, we talk about focusing on our weaknesses, what we want to get rid of. Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim talks about how important it is to put these items into our consciousness and visualize achieving it or overcoming it. By doing this, we are building up our strength and our discipline to breakthrough. We should all visualize the goals we want to achieve and the steps and actions it takes to achieve it. We should also set goals for ourselves for the weaknesses we want to get rid of and start taking action to chip away at them.

At Jung SuWon Martial Art Academy, training is more than just about learning how to punch or kick. It goes far beyond just learning the physical aspect, alone. It’s a lifestyle. Everything we learn in the training floor can be applied in different environments and in every situation. In today’s blog, we are going to share an amazing success stories and personal testimonial from one of Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim’s student.

Harrison Peoples is a 5th Dan Black Belt Instructor at Jung SuWon. Also, he completed 21 years of military service in May 1980 and retired as a Major US

Army, from Fort Ord, California. He moved to Silicon Valley gained a reputation

as a Human Resource Professional working for some of the top organizations

in the Valley. His work in the Silicon Valley required long stressful hours to be

successful. Here’s what he would like to share about how training helped him in different areas of his life.

“I attended school at night to complete a post graduate degree,

while raising a family and working a full time job. During that next 12 years I

gained 6-8 inches around the waist and 30 pounds in the wrong place. Hence a

diagnosis of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a list of other ailments.

In the fall of 1992 I applied for and was accepted into the JSW family as a white

belt. I started my training as a means to lose weight, learn more patience and

have a calmer demeanor. I can honestly say that I never thought when I first

step on that floor that more than a quarter of a century later I would remain

involved and feel just as adamant about the value of my transformation from

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim’s teachings.

Physical instincts are still with me from Viet Nam. I awake at the slightest

noise at night; I hear sounds that place me back in Viet Nam as if it was

yesterday. My training has provided me with insight to some of my demons.

In 1974 -1975, as a Company Commander, I received a letter from a

mother who son died while going through basic training in my Company. The

first letter simply stated her son complained about not feeling well with the

physical training. I assured her that we would take care of her son. Her son

died later, whereas I received a second letter. She reminded me that I gave

her my word that I would take care of her son. I knew that I followed all that I

was required. I would read that letter at least 5-6 times per year it reminded

me of how arrogance and destructive I can be. I could have done more to

ensure that the medical staff takes his complaints more serious. Through Jung SuWon

training I learned to let go of past mistakes and learn from those mistakes.

Learning how to not let the past debilitate your need to move forward.

Learning how to love and forgive oneself for mistakes. Forgiving myself for

that act so many years ago was not easy. If not for my training, I would

probably continue to feel the guilt of that tragic loss.

Viet Nam had taught me how fragile life was and could be. A value I

hold dear but there were the aforementioned incidents that haunted me. I am

better than that. I could have done more. It was the guilt I carried secretly in

my heart for many years. Learning and developing the capacity to love and

forgive myself would not have occurred without Jung Su Won training. I

remember those early years of self-discovery through Inner Power Training

and Self Discovery Weekends.

The first time I heard Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim play the flute I was so touch

by the soothing sound. At an Arts and Craft Fair, I saw native American Flutes

for sale. I bought a flute and thought if I did not learn, I would hang it on my

wall. My first note was so warm that I played until the early hours of morning.

I have now been playing for several years. Most of my life I held a desire to

play a musical instrument. I possess neither, the discipline or drive to learn

until JSW. The desire to play was only a wish. But inspired by “He can do she

can do why not me” I have found a musical outlet to express my emotion and

feelings. This has helped me to more readily keep a pulse on how I feel inside.

In stressful situations the vibrations of sound has a calming effect. While

shopping during Christmas, there were long (slow) moving lines. I was getting

impatient. The energy was bouncing off the wall. You could feel the tension in

the air. I start to play my flute. After a couple melodies I could feel the

calmness. Other patrons mentioned how calming the musical effect impacted

them.

The most impactful impression on me while training at Jung SuWon was the

discovery that I had spend more than ten of the previous years being a father,

husband, professional that I had all but forgotten my dreams. I start taking

responsibility for my own happiness. As a result, I found a peace and love that

was missing from my previous life. It provided me the freedom to think more

about my impatient, to work at being more loving. How to love unconditional

was a challenge. As an example, I would dread visiting Philadelphia, each

visit; I would spend so much time counseling my sister about her lifestyle. It

would drain my energy. Learning to love my sister unconditionally freed me

to just experience the joy of loving her and engaging with her without all of my

criticism about her lifestyle. Our last years were fill with more visit and just

each other’s kids. This one aspect of my learning at Jung SuWon was worth all of the

years of training. I learned that I couldn’t live for others; I must allow them to

walk the path of their life in their own manner. He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me”

We have been buzzing with all sorts of activity!  Never a dull moment at Jung Suwon, and that is how Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim likes it to be!  She wants to share her wisdom with people of all ages, and has always something going on!

We just had a most outstanding testing last Thursday, it was the Jung Suwon 28-year in California  anniversary!  The Dojang was packed, and for the first time ever Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim divided up the DoJang into 3 rings, for 3 testing groups to challenge themselves at the same time.  We’ll put up a lot more pictures and stories about that!

Last weekend our brave and valiant demo team went up to San Francisco to perform at the Korean Festival, right on Union Square.

Korean Festival

The place was packed, and a large, enthusiastic crowd gave support to the team.

and splits his energy equally and breaks both stacks of bricks!

Then, Master Palmer shows intense focus and concentration during his “jump over 4 people rolling break.”  Check it out:

And one of our purple belts, Luke Amador, dazzles with a fancy kick break routine, proving that no matter what age you are – you can achieve your goals!

At Jung Suwon, the demo team is not to show off a difficult skill, or just go to perform.  Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim allows students on the demo team not because they can pay money, or because they are so good.  No, at Jung Suwon, Our Great Grandmaster gives her students the opportunity to face their fears and anxieties and overcome them, to encourage them even more to become their best!

Stay in tune for more Jung Suwon updates, especially from the testing!

Master Karen Heart is bringing on the flower power!

This weekend, there has been a lot of activity at our own Jung Suwon facility, all sorts of beautification and improvements going on!

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim wants us to have the best possible place to train at, and so has encouraged us to make some improvements – lets take a look at what is happening!

Jung Suwon Student planting team

Planting at Jung Suwon isn’t just putting flowers into the ground.  Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim encourages us to think beyond – when preparing the soil – prepare to accomplish a goal.  When we settle a plant into the ground, we set our goals, give them root.  When we put the soil around the plant, and tamp it down, we add determination to our goals.  Finally, when we weed and water, we also pull out everything that could prevent us from accomplishing our goals, and we give our goals renewed energy.

There is always something going on at Jung Suwon, and whether it’s a formal class, or an opportunity to put in your energy during facility upgrades – it’s all part of learning!

As Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim always says, have a purpose and determination!

HE CAN DO, SHE CAN DO, WHY NOT ME!

Check out our new students at Jung Suwon!  Let’s welcome all the many new white belts!

Welcome to Jung Suwon!

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim emphasizes the importance of families. Nowadays, it is very hard to have some family time together.  With both parents working, as is the case in the majority of American families, and kids involved in different activities, school or otherwise, it’s hard to carve out some time to be together.

NewJSWFamily7 copy

Families that train together, have more fun together, stay healthier, stronger, and have a lot to talk about and share!

But whether you are single, or have a family, come join us and train hard with us!  Everyone who joins us come for their own reasons – what is yours?  If you want to just be in better shape – no problem!  If you want your child to pay more attention at home and at school – training will help with that.  If your child is being bullied in school, we will teach him/her how to stand up to a bully.  If you need to lose weight, we have programs for you!

What you get out of training?  That depends to a great degree on how much you put in, and what you want to accomplish.

Whether you are just starting to consider training, or have already started, or have been training for many years: Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim has something for everyone, and always says this:

“The power is in you, it is your personal choice what you do in your life!

HE CAN DO, SHE CAN DO, WHY NOT ME!

Of course you know your primary reason for going to Jung Suwon:  You want to learn traditional Martial Art at its best.  You want either yourself, or your child, to develop inner power, strength, confidence, agility, awareness, focus, concentration, and a whole bunch of other things.  Or perhaps you are there because you want to get in better shape or want to lose weight.  Whatever your reason – you will achieve your goals, if you work hard, if you are persistent, and if you are determined to not give up.

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim encourages us to fully do “Jung Suwon” – to put together body, mind, and spirit in total harmony. So we have been having a lot of fun activities at Jung Suwon Super Martial Arts.

You might ask, what does that have to do with Martial Arts?  Well, everything!  Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim explains that Martial Arts don’t just happen in the DoJang, or when we are sparring or doing forms.  Martial Arts are a way of life!  Many students report that after starting to train at Jung Suwon, their performances in other sports improved dramatically.  Also, they are better able to focus and concentrate and so get better grades as well.

This past Saturday, May 26th, we have had a very private Black Belt Testing at Jung Suwon.  Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim tested our three mature warriors, ranging from age 61 – 72,  for the next level black belt.

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim had invited a few very special guests and wowed them with an incredible program, including the use of new breaking materials.

Mr. Greg Dumas, Mr. Bert McMahon and Mr. Harrison Peoples were on deck and did a most fantastic job.  More on that in the next post though, plus an exciting video to show you highlights of what happened.

Meanwhile, here is a beautiful and all new Jung Suwon self-defense routine performed by Ms. Nabi White and Master Jonathan Palmer.

HE CAN DO, SHE CAN DO, WHY NOT ME!

This summer we are in for a real treat!  Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim just announced that on some weekend this summer, Jung Suwon will go back to basics for a day – out into the woods, into the mountains, to give Jung Suwon warriors young and old a little taste of traditional training!

But what is Jung Suwon back to basics training?  Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim points out that while we cannot go back in time, what we can do is go out into nature and connect with it similar how the olden time Masters trained their students.  Since we live in the here and now, in the 21st Century, we do have to adapt somewhat.

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim further invites us to experience Ki energy straight from nature, to learn to connect and utilize that Ki energy in our daily lives.  You will come back with increased self-confidence, motivation, Inner Power, inner peace, appreciation for team work,  just to name a few.

Here are some pictures to help you visualize what you might experience that day:

So, come on over to Jung Suwon, and let Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim know you want to sign up!

HE CAN DO, SHE CAN DO, WHY NOT ME!

“You are always testing!”

This is a favorite saying here at Jung Suwon.  And indeed, every student, from the time they set foot into Jung Suwon, every day, is a testing.  Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim explains it this way: on testing day, what we do is important, but it is for show, it is for the guests mostly.  Sure, in the Jung Suwon DoJang, you have to perform in front of a lot of people, and the familiar stage is now differently set up, with head table and all and you will have to overcome all kinds of fears in order to do your best.  Still, the real testing happens in your day to day performance, at Jung Suwon and wherever you are.  For example, how is your attitude when you come to train?  Do you come to class as much as you can?  Or do you sometimes choose to be lazy?

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim continues, “The real testing is this – can you maintain your goals?  The ones that you have set at your last testing, or when you started your Jung Suwon training?  Are you working harder in school?  Are you keeping your room cleaner?  Are you coming to Jung Suwon classes more?  Have you lost that weight?  Are you controlling your anger better?”

So yes, testing at Jung Suwon is serious business.  Not only do you need to do your best at Jung Suwon, in front of a crowd of spectators, and in front of Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim and all the Grandmasters and Masters, you also need to do your best every day in class, and in whatever you do!

Are you up for the challenge?

Of course you are!  HE CAN DO, SHE CAN DO, WHY NOT ME!!!
