I’ve been thinking a lot about efficiency and time management the past few months. In the modern and digital world, we are inundated with an overload of information. We have access to different social media platforms, access to information online and current events happening all over the world. We can use this as an advantage for ourselves or it can be a detriment to our goals.

I’ve noticed there are times where I just browse the internet and look up different things, whether it is related to news, events or celebrities. At times, I realize that I get caught up daydreaming or wondering what it would be like to be a celebrity. Sometimes this can lead to complaints or negativity. I’ve come to realize that this is all noise and is a waste of time. Rather than spending my time daydreaming or being romantic about my views on life or what I feel to be the way it should be, I should be putting in the work to achieve my goals and dreams. The time I am thinking about other “things” is a waste of my time and will take me further away from achieving my goal. Instead of all that, I need to spend more time working on my goals.

My mentor Tae Yun Kim talks to me about having clarity in my goals and also having a one point focus. I need to be precise about what exactly I want in my life. Once I set my mind on it, I take the necessary steps and actions to work towards my goal. In addition to that, she teaches me about one point focus. The ability to have “tunnel vision” and block out all the noise and negativity. When those other distractions settle in, it hinders me from achieving my goals and can potentially affect adversely to never be able to achieve my goal. Both of these attributes are honed during my martial arts training through vigorous training and meditation. I’ve learned to hone in on these skills and I encourage everyone to practice on their own. Discipline does not happen overnight but is a habit that needs to be continually practiced.

2017 is rapidly coming to an end which means it is holiday season. Christmas is right around the corner and then 2018 will be right here. Have you achieved the goals you set out for 2017? Do you know what your goals will be for 2018? Like our founder Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim talks about, we must have a “future memory”. The goal we have set is already achieved in our minds.

At the Jung SuWon Christmas Party, it is a great opportunity to converse with the parents and students and get to know each other better. Many times, students are dropped off at the school and the instructors are always running the classes. There might not be an extended opportunity for instructors and parents to interact with each other. However, at Jung SuWon, it is a community oriented martial arts school and we want to make a positive difference in all of our student’s lives. This Christmas party is a good time to get to know the instructors much better and for everybody to interact with each other and have a good time. There was lots of food during the potluck and a lot of games and prizes that were won during the event. It was definitely a festive time for everybody there and an opportunity for everyone to relax and enjoy each other’s company.IMG_8651

Let’s make 2018 the most successful year yet!

Every year, a group of Korean students from Yukju come to Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy to visit for a special purpose. Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy’s Belt Testing provides a series of challenges to test a student’s determination, focus and perseverance. Many of the color belts had the opportunity to test for this testing cycle and they performed very well. Continuous training on the dojang floor paid off for these students as they were able to execute their techniques and perform. Forms required endurance, sparring required determination and breaking the boards required focus and perseverance.

Our founder Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches her students about overcoming challenges in their lives. During testing, we go through many different thoughts and emotions. We go through struggles that test our determination and our perseverance. However, Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim instills in her students the will and the grit to overcome our challenges and our fears. All of the students were able to overcome their challenges and break through.

Congratulations to all of the warriors who testing for this testing cycle. We look forward to seeing you at the Belt Ceremony.

He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me! Jung Su!

This is the time of year where school will be out of session and summer will officially begin. The students will be excited that school is over and they are able to have their summer break. There will still be summer school and tutoring and other activities, but I’m sure everyone is excited that the school year is over.

Now that school is out of session, this is a prime opportunity to focus, develop and work on a goal you’ve been striving for. Whether it is to try a new activity or try to improve at something, the next few months will be a good opportunity for you to invest your time into these activities. At Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy, we are always encouraging the students to not be afraid of new things. We want our students to gain the confidence to be able to try new activities or try new things. Or, a student’s goal might be to gain more flexibility or become stronger or be able to execute a new kicking technique. Nevertheless, this is a time to stay focused and motivated on your goals.

Our founder Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches us to strive for our goals and not be afraid to make mistakes. We need to believe in ourselves and have confidence in ourselves to overcome challenges and obstacles. Many times it is ourselves who set barriers or restrictions on ourselves. How many times have we tried something and realized that it was not as bad as we first thought it was? I’m sure we’ve all had that experience at one point or another.

He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me! Jung Su!

Congratulations to all of the newly promoted students at Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy! Your hard work has paid off and you are now representing the next belt rank level. Continue to stay focused and work hard in your training and in your lives.

At Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy, each of the belt ranks represents a new stepping stone and a new goal to strive for. Not only are we striving to obtain the next belt rank, but we also set forth a goal we want to achieve in our lives, whether it is to get better grades, become healthier, or whatever it might be. Take that goal with you and fertilize it in your mind and put forth the actions to make it happen.

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim says that “Whatever we do in our lives is our personal choice. We have the power to fulfill our dreams and our goals.” Carry this quote with you throughout your life and in your training and achieve the goals you set out on. We are looking forward to the next belt testing and belt ceremony!

Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy recently had our 110th Belt Testing Cycle. There were students of various color ranks testing to obtain their next belt rank. The students were nervous and anxious, but this is an opportunity for them to display what they have learned through their training. It is a testing of not only the physical aspects, but also the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects.

Our founder Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches us about ki energy and power from within. We have an energy force within us that we can tap into that acts as a generator. She teaches us about the spirit of never giving up and pushing through obstacles with grit and determination. During the testing cycle, these traits were demonstrated by the students as they persevered through forms, sparring and breakings. Also during our regular classes, we learn about meditation and remaining calm. During the testing, the students displayed composure and calmness as they were being tested on different aspects.

Congratulations to all of the testing candidates striving to reach their next belt rank level.

He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me! Jung Su!

Many times, we tend to take our “breaks” during the weekend. We compromise with ourselves saying we had a long week of school or a long week of work. Yes, it is important for us to take breaks, but it is also important to differentiate between taking a break versus being lazy.

This past Saturday, Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy had our Saturday morning class for all ages. We had students from all belt ranks participate and work out together. It was great to see all of the students fill up the dojang floor on a Saturday morning. I’m sure their friends or colleagues are at home watching television or still sleeping, but these students were up in the morning to work out and train.

It is important to maintain your level of focus and discipline at all times, even when school or work is out. Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches us to evaluate ourselves and see how we are doing regularly. This is important so we can determine what areas we can improve and work on. Continue to train hard and focus on your responsibilities! Jung Su!

The physical aspects of martial arts training isn’t only about kicking and punching. We also learn more about how to utilize our body and learning about the mechanics and coordination of our bodies. This requires lots of practice to become good at it and this requires different methods of working out our body with lots of repetition.  At Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy, we work on different exercises that help us refine our coordination and our abilities.

For the regular classes, we practiced a fun activity that all of the students can enjoy. We were practicing our coordination by jumping back and forth above a belt. As we succeed in one particular height, we would elevate the belt to a higher height. This helps us to challenge ourselves as the belt height gradually becomes higher.

This is a fun and exciting way for us to challenge ourselves and our bodies. We are inclined to work out with exercises through kicking and punching, but it is also good to work out through different exercises. Through this exercise, the students were able to challenge themselves and work on their coordination and jumping abilities.

We should always seek out ways to improve ourselves and to enhance our abilities and we should do it in ways that are fun and exciting for all of the students.

Tuesday’s classes at Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy is separated by color belt ranks. This provides the opportunity for the senior belt ranks to have classes together and focus on a particular topic. The instructors are able to cover a specific topic with that group of students and work with them to help them improve. Generally, these classes would cover different advanced techniques which can be more challenging to work on during regular classes when there is a diverse group of students.

This is an effective method for both the instructor to provide guidance to the students and for the students to have a platform to focus on their advanced techniques.

This past Tuesday, the purple, blue and brown belts were able to work on their advanced techniques. They practiced a series of advanced techniques with their partners. In martial arts, it is all about repetition and practice, so it is important that the students practice the advanced techniques on a regular basis.

Watch this student practice his axe kick during the class with his partner.

This is the beginning of the new year, so all students should strive to improve and set new goals for executing their advanced techniques.
