2020 is officially here and it is a good time to reflect on the past year and decade and also plan for the future. What goals have we achieved from last year? What do we want to improve on for this new year? This is the beginning of a new decade and it is an opportunity to evaluate the goals we have set and achieved from last year. It is important to have a renewed and focused energy for the new year. During martial arts training, Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim focuses on the mental and emotional aspects of training as well as the physical aspects. She talks about how it is important to visualize the goals we want to achieve and put it in the forefront of our minds so that we take the necessary steps to achieve our goals.

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim also talks about this being a new era. We live in a digital and technological age where information is changing rapidly. How are we communicating with others and sharing information? How are we expressing gratitude for the things we have?

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim reminds her students to be loyal to their goals and be willing to sacrifice for your goals. It is important to recognize that you won’t be able to achieve everything all at once and it will take steps and continuous effort and determination. Whether it is physical goals or career goals, it is important to list them out and start to take the steps to start achieving them. Let this year be the year where you take large steps towards your goals!

What happens when you pour water into a cup? How about when you pour that same water into a teapot? How about when you pour that same water into a bowl? That water is formless and shapeless and turns into what environment it is put in.

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches her students to be flexible like water. She teaches about an approach where we learn to be mentally flexible; where there is no rigidity to our thought process. Instead, we have an open approach to what happens in our lives. We want to be positive and make sure we are focused on the right things, but having flexibility helps us to manage stress, deal with issues and problems and manage our lives better. This mindset will help us to focus on the present and the future and be ready for events that occur in our lives. Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches this principle during her martial arts classes and training.

Everyone has issues or problems that they need to deal with on a daily basis, whether it is in your career, family or financial. New issues regularly come into existence that bring about stress and unbalance. Developing a flexible mental approach helps us to deal with these problems in a calmer and more balanced manner. We should all start to practice and build up our habit of having a flexible mindset.

We are living in the 21st century, where our lifestyles are fast-paced and rapidly moving. Our days are filled with tasks and responsibilities that we need to complete and we are bombarded with the use of technology. Nevertheless, it is important for all of us to make time for ourselves as a means of self-evaluation and self-reflection. We need to spend that time with ourselves thinking about our goals, where we want to go and be in our lives, and how to go about achieving them. This process can be done through meditation as well.

Why is it important to make time for ourselves? Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches about quieting our minds and listening to our Silent Master. Sometimes we are so engaged in what we need to do that we don’t have time to think. Instead, we just do the things that we are supposed to do, one thing after another. However, spending that quiet time helps us to gather ourselves, meditate and think about where we are. It helps us to give a focus and a purpose of why we are doing the things we are doing. It also gives us a moment to evaluate if I am taking the necessary steps to achieve my goals.

For example, during Jung SuWon classes, Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches about separating the dojang floor with the lobby. Once we step on the dojang floor, we salute the flag and then we enter. We are training the students to differentiate the lobby from the training floor. Once we are on the training floor, we are there to train. Mentally, we are also separating ourselves from the stressful day at work or the argument we got into. Instead, we enter the training floor and we forget about that stressful thing during class. In these times, we focus on ourselves and we train without thinking about the outside things we need to deal with.

We should make it a routine to stop for a moment and evaluate ourselves. The more we are willing to stop and think, the more we are able to determine and evaluate ourselves and how to improve in different areas.

“Yes, people do make mistakes and hurt others. We all make mistakes. But you never need to condemn yourself or anyone else over and over again for those mistakes. Learn whatever you need to, let it go, and then move on to create a new reality. The main obstacle to forgiving yourself is guilt. If you think back to your childhood, didn’t authority figures usually deal with mistakes or misbehavior by condemning the behavior and the person engaged in it? We weren’t taught that a mistake is an opportunity for education or an opportunity to see what doesn’t work so we can create a better solution.

Welcome to the New Year 2017. This is a time where everybody begins to think about their plans and goals for this year. It is also a time to reflect on the previous year to see what goals were accomplished. Did I achieve the goals I set out to achieve? Did I improve on the different areas I wanted to improve?

At Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy, we began the new year with a kick-off class for 2017. All of the students of all ages and belt ranks gathered to practice and work out together. It was a class of unity and working together. Overall, it was a high energy class with positivity surrounding the training floor.

Everyone had the opportunity to regain their flexibility and wake up different muscles of the body that were dormant during the holiday break. School will be back in session and the schedule will return back to normal. All of the students were excited to be there to be able to work out and be in class and get their body moving. At the end, we gathered together to kick off the New Year with celebratory cake to start off the new year.

As Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches us, we should set our “Future Memory” for 2017 and think about what we want to achieve. Visualize the goal and know that it has already been achieved inside of your mind and put into action. Everybody stay focused and let’s make it an awesome 2017!

Jung Su!

He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me!

With so much going on at Jung Suwon, it’s hard to know where to start!  Let’s focus on testing  – we just had one about 10 days ago, and it was, as always, a most wonderful occasion.

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim was guiding her students through some amazing accomplishments.  In the picture above, you see purple belt Luke Amador performing flying sidekick over a pyramid of 5 people!

But Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim emphasizes that every day is testing, not just the day we come and “perform.”  Testing is an ongoing procedure, that starts when you sign up for classes, and never really stops.

Just as in school, your final grade doesn’t hinge on only your test taking skills, so in the Martial Arts – testing day is not the whole picture.  In regular school, you will be graded on attendance, attitude, homework and much more.

At Jung Suwon, you will also be graded according your attitude, attendance, participation, and to some extent how well you perform at the actual testing.

Basically – what you put in, is what you get out.

And of course, at Jung Suwon, you will never be compared to anyone – you are an original, not a copy!  You will only be compared to yourself – measured by your own progress!

So, let’s enjoy some pictures that illustrate this:

Almost a year ago, in May of 2012, we had an exciting black belt testing.  3 Gentlemen were testing, and today, we’ll highlight Mr. Greg Dumas.

Mr. Dumas receives his Second Degree Black Belt

Prior to his start in the Martial Arts, Mr. Dumas had never engaged in any physical activity.  He was an engineer, and only used his mind, never his body.  He is a great engineer, and holds several patents.

During his first year of training, or perhaps, even years, when he started training at Jung Suwon, he only would come in the afternoons and walk around the Do Jang when nobody else was there.  He would do that for hours.  Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim just let him be, and gave him that freedom to express himself that way.

Under Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim’s carefully planned training, Greg improved incredibly over the years.  He gained confidence in his physical abilities, and learned to put body, mind, and spirit together as one.

Now, he is full of confidence, has joined the Jung Suwon Demo team, and is a living example of Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim‘s teachings.  See in the following pictures what an incredible warrior he has become!

Our beautiful new Super Martial Arts facility!

Our beautiful new Super Martial Arts facility!

The New Year has started with a bang at Jung Suwon Supermartial Arts, at our new facility! Now that our Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim is back from her extended stay in Korea, and has been coming to class just as often as her busy schedule allows, our school has been exploding with new students of all ages, all sizes, and from all walks of life!

If you are already a student at Jung Suwon, and if you are already yellow belt and above, please help make our new Jung Suwon warriors feel right at home, and welcome! Introduce yourself, and see what you can do to help out. For example, if someone isn’t quite sure yet how to tie a belt, or if it’s a very young warrior, give them a hand and show them how. If they are a bit insecure as to what to do when they enter the Do Jang, walk in with them and show them again. Pass on what our teacher Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim has showed us.

Think back to the time when you first started to train, and how you felt. Weren’t you glad that you had some students walk up to you and show you around? Remember the warm smiles, and also remember your first classes and how awkward you felt in those “white pajamas, and how comforting it was to have people smile at you and reassure you that no matter how you did in your first class – everyone starts somewhere!

Lots has been going on, in Korea as well as right here, at Jung SuWon‘s new DoJang!  If you are following us on Facebook, you have been seeing lots of pictures of Great Grandmaster in Korea, and here are a few more:
